20ft vs 40ft vs 40HC: Which Container Fits Your Cargo?

Picking the right container is a balance of volume, weight and cost. Here is how the three most common dry containers compare, and how to choose.

The three standard dry containers

  • 20ft (20'): roughly 33 CBM of usable space with a payload around 28,000 kg. The compact, heavy-duty option for dense or heavy goods.
  • 40ft (40'): about 67 CBM with a payload around 26,500 kg. The standard for most full-load shipments.
  • 40ft high-cube (40'HC): about 76 CBM with a similar payload to the 40ft. Around 30 cm taller, which matters for bulky, stackable cargo.

Think in volume AND weight

A 20ft and a 40ft are close in payload, but the 40ft carries twice the volume. So the rule of thumb:

  • Heavy, dense goods (steel, machinery, liquids) hit the weight limit long before the box is full — a 20ft often makes more sense and costs less.
  • Light, bulky goods (furniture, cartons of foam or textiles) fill the volume first — a 40ft or a 40HC uses the extra height well.

This is exactly the "bottleneck" your loading calculator should name: are you out of space first, or over weight first?

When the high-cube shines

Choose the 40HC when your cargo is volume-hungry but light — for example tall, stackable cartons. The extra height converts into real usable space. If your goods are near a 40ft weight limit, the high-cube adds nothing.

Compare before you book

Never book on price alone. Compute your total CBM and total weight, then check both against each candidate container. The cheapest-looking option is the one that wastes the least of whichever you will hit first.
