How Many Cartons Fit a 40ft Container? Real Loading Math

There is no single 'right' number of cartons for a 40ft container — it depends entirely on your carton size, weight and orientation. But the reasoning is simple and you can do it yourself.
Start from usable volume, not the nominal CBM
A nominal 40ft container is about 67–76 m³, but not all of it is usable: the space between the door corrugations, the floor rails, and the fact that cartons rarely fill a box perfectly. A practical usable figure is often 85–90% of nominal.
For quick planning, divide your usable capacity by a single carton's cubic metres to get an approximate count before refining with a proper load.
A worked example
Take a carton of 60cm × 40cm × 30cm = 0.072 m³. Use roughly 68 m³ usable. 68 / 0.072 ≈ 944 cartons by volume.
But you should not stop at volume: if each carton is 25 kg, that is 944 × 25 = 23.6 tonnes — near or above the container's payload. So weight may cut the number down.
Orientation and stacking matter
Whether cartons sit upright, on their side, or how many layers you can stack affects how many fit. The arrangement changes the number significantly.
