HS Code 101

How to Find the Correct HS Code for Your Product in 3 Steps

Practical guidance from HS Code Toolbox

Finding the right HS code does not require a customs expert — it requires a disciplined three-step approach. Do it in this order and you will land on the right classification far more often than guessing.

Step 1 — Start with the product, not the code

Describe your product in plain terms, then search by that name in a lookup tool. Search by what the product is and what it is made of — the HS system classifies by composition and function, not by brand.

Step 2 — Read the subheading wording carefully

Open the candidate subheadings and compare their exact wording to your product. Customs classifies by the legal text of the description, not by what the item is commonly called. Watch for words like 'of plastics', 'of iron or steel', or 'parts and accessories', which change the classification.

Step 3 — Verify with the chapter notes and a broker

Read the section and chapter notes for your candidate code — they contain crucial inclusions and exclusions. Then, for high-value or ambiguous products, confirm the code with your customs broker before committing.

A wrong code can change your duty rate, trigger exams, or cause delays. The small effort of double-checking is worth it.
